Mayor Kathy Sheehan has released the following statement regarding the slashing of an Albany Police Officer and use of force incident that occurred Monday morning on Green Street.
“I have been briefed by Chief Hawkins regarding the slashing of an Albany Police Officer and use of force incident that took place this morning.
“I commend the officers who responded to a domestic dispute call that escalated when the individual who was the subject of that call pulled out a knife and slashed one of our officers. After this attempted deadly attack, a second Albany Police Officer discharged his weapon, striking the assailant who continued to attempt to stab the first Police Officer. As the investigation into this incident continues, I echo Chief Hawkins’ commitment to transparency and cooperation with external agencies.
“Unfortunately, as we have been reminded over the last several months, any 911 call can put members of the Albany Police Department in life-or-death situations. The officers involved in this morning’s call showed tremendous restraint and resolve, even as one of their own suffered a serious and potentially life-threatening injury. I am grateful for the men and women of our Police Department and my thoughts are with the officers involved in this traumatic encounter.”
