At the 2023 Annual General Membership Meeting three new members were elected to the board of directors.
Jennifer Burden was elected to her first three-year term after being appointed to the board in 2022 to fill the vacated seat by David Marting. Jennifer is the publisher of the Gillette News Record and the area director for the Cody Enterprise. Prior to that, she owned a newspaper consulting business, which she started in 2019. As a consultant, Burden worked with multiple papers across the country. In that role, she helped redesign weekly papers, edit and proof copy, and train and coach editors and reporters.
Prior to that, Burden was the editor of the Buffalo Bulletin.
Throughout her career, Burden has focused on community journalism, encouraging editors and reporters alike to tell the stories that make a community what it is.
Burden served as an Inland Press Association fellow and has attended classes at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, a renowned journalism institute in Florida.
“I’m honored to serve as a director on the WPA board,” Burden said. "I’ve worked with newspapers across the country, and without a doubt, Wyoming newspapers are among the best. I look forward to helping continue that legacy.”
Also elected to their first term is Adam Meyer the Publisher of the Jackson Hole News&Guide and Jackson Hole Daily, along with the magazine titles produced by Teton Media Works, Inc where he is Chief Operating Officer and Vice President.
Adam leads all divisions of Teton Media Works including newspaper, digital, revenue, business services, printing, and distribution, the Jackson Hole Daily, Jackson Hole magazine, Grand Wedding, Teton Family, and since 2020, Buckrail and Best of Jackson Hole. He has managed revenue and operations across all Teton Media Works divisions since 2015, leading the organization to further diversified profitability. Through an era of news disruption, divestment, and misinformation, Teton Media Works has continued revenue and audience growth as a family-owned, local media company.
An advocate for the local business community, Adam recently completed 8 years of service on the board of the Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce, including a year as chairman in 2021-22 during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Adam holds a B.A. in Journalism from the University of Minnesota, and, after coming to Jackson to ski and work seasonally as a river guide in Grand Teton National Park, joined the Jackson Hole News&Guide and Jackson Hole Daily advertising department in 2005. He is a seasoned Grand Canyon boatman, a passionate public lands user, powder seeker and single-track rider. He and his wife Jen live South of Jackson with their two dogs.
The third newly elected board member is Joshua Wood, Operations Director for Stevenson Newspapers. He is serving on the WPA Board of Directors for the second time. Wood was first employed at the Saratoga Sun as a reporter in January 2018 and was promoted to editor/publisher in August 2019. Following a brief absence in the summer of 2022, Wood returned to Stevenson Newspapers where he was placed in his current position.
"I'm deeply honored to be able to serve on the Board of Directors, again. During my first tenure on the board, I greatly appreciated working with other board members and Executive Director Darcie Hoffland," said Wood. "Returning to print journalism, my hope is to show that the desire for strong and vibrant community journalism is still alive and well."
The other serving board of directors include Kristen Czaban, publisher of The Sheridan Press, Jen Sieve-Hicks, managing editor of the Buffalo Bulletin, and Jeff Moberg newly elected WPA 2023 President and publisher of the Sundance Times, Moorcroft Leader, and Wyoming Pioneer.
Also on the board are Associates Group Liaison Milton Ontiveroz, and ex-officio members Cindy Price Schultz, UW Dept. of Communication and Journalism and Ken Smith, UW Liaison Emeritis.
There is still a vacant seat on the board. If anyone is interested in serving, please reach out to the WPA office. Under amended article 4, section 1 of the WPA constitution, members of the board of directors shall be owners, publishers or senior staff members who execute leadership responsibilities and decision making for newspaper publishing businesses. The board makeup no longer requires representation by newspaper publishing categories such as dailies and small weeklies.
Committees this year include: Hall of Fame, Legislative, Marketing, Contest & Convention, and Media Literacy. To view a list of all committee members go to wyopress.org/site/board_members.html. If you would like to work on any of the WPA committees, please contact Darcie at the WPA Office.
