WASHINGTON, D.C. - A group of Republican senators, including Senate Western Caucus Chair Cynthia Lummis and U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, have penned a scathing letter to the Biden administration expressing their concerns over the decision to pause all pending non-Free Trade Agreement export permit applications for liquefied natural gas (LNG). The senators criticized the administration for succumbing to pressure from the radical climate lobby and highlighted the detrimental impact this decision will have on domestic energy production.

The letter, addressed to President Biden and Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, comes in response to the administration's announcement that it will reevaluate the criteria for approving permits for LNG export projects. The senators argue that this move is harmful, particularly at a time when American LNG exports are surging while other nations are reducing their imports from Russia.

In the letter, the senators stressed that limiting U.S. LNG exports will not affect the world's demand for natural gas. Instead, countries such as Russia and Iran will increase their energy production, which is subject to less stringent environmental regulations. This, in turn, could potentially add to global emissions rather than reducing them, contrary to the administration's goal of combating climate change.

"We strongly urge you to stop this shortsighted effort. As the President of the United States and as the Secretary of Energy, you should be championing – not undermining – American LNG exports and the environmental, economic, and national security benefits to the United States and our allies," concluded the senators.

The letter was signed by 16 Senate Western Caucus members, including Dan Sullivan, John Barrasso, Jim Risch, Steve Daines, Lisa Murkowski, Ted Cruz, Kevin Cramer, Jerry Moran, Mike Lee, Mike Crapo, Pete Ricketts, J.D. Vance, John Cornyn, James Lankford, Mike Rounds, and John Kennedy.

The senators emphasized the importance of American LNG exports, highlighting the environmental, economic, and national security benefits they bring to the United States and its allies. They called on President Biden and Secretary Granholm to reconsider their decision and to prioritize the promotion of American LNG exports.
