WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) and U.S. Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN) have introduced the Preventing Foreign Interference in American Elections Act, aimed at preventing foreign nationals from improperly influencing American elections. Senator Lummis emphasized the importance of ensuring that elections are determined by Americans, stating, “Elections in our country should be decided by the American people, not foreign nationals trying to sway the outcome by funneling money to candidates or ballot harvesting initiatives.”
The legislation, supported by prominent election integrity organizations such as the Honest Elections Project, the Heritage Foundation, and Americans for Public Trust, includes measures to prevent various forms of foreign interference in U.S. elections. It specifically prohibits foreign nationals from contributing to activities such as ballot harvesting, get-out-the-vote initiatives, and public communications promoting political parties.
Senator Lummis expressed her pride in collaborating on the bill, highlighting its goal of safeguarding elections from foreign influence and returning power to American citizens, stating, “I’m proud to join my colleagues in introducing this commonsense legislation to safeguard our elections from foreign interference and give the power back to the American people.”
The Preventing Foreign Interference in American Elections Act aims to prevent the circumvention of bans on indirect election-related contributions by foreign nationals and restrict foreign donations in connection with state ballot initiatives. Additionally, the bill prohibits overbroad investigations or government collection of Americans' nonprofit donor information that could infringe on free speech rights.
