U.S. Senators John Barrasso, Cynthia Lummis (both R-WY), and Mike Lee (R-UT) have introduced the Ending FCC Meddling in Our Elections Act of 2024. This legislation aims to block what they describe as an attempt by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to interfere with the upcoming presidential election.

“It is unacceptable for unelected, Democrat federal officials to abuse their power and interfere in the upcoming presidential elections,” said Senator Barrasso. “The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and other federal agencies should not have any influence at the ballot box. This bill will protect voters in Wyoming and ensure free and fair elections across the board.”

Senator Lummis echoed these sentiments, stating, “The new rule introduced by the FCC’s Democrat majority is their eleventh-hour attempt to tip the scales in favor of Democrats ahead of the presidential election. No federal agency should have the ability to interfere in our elections process, and our bill ensures the American people, not a biased agency, determines the outcome of the presidential election.”

Last month, a Democrat majority on the FCC issued a notice of proposed rulemaking that announced plans to introduce new regulations on AI use in campaign ads appearing on TV and radio. The newly proposed legislation seeks to prohibit using federal funds to enforce any rules resulting from this notice.

According to Barrasso and Lummis, only Congress should determine regulations surrounding AI-generated campaign ads through a careful and transparent deliberative process.
