U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming has expressed her condolences following the death of former Wyoming Senator Al Simpson. In a statement, Lummis highlighted Simpson's extensive career and contributions to both the state and the nation.
"Today, our state and country mourn the passing of our dear Senator Alan Kooi Simpson," Lummis remarked. She emphasized his lifelong dedication to Wyoming, noting his 18 years in the U.S. Senate, 12 years in the Wyoming House of Representatives, and 28 years as an elder statesman. "There was no stronger advocate for the needs, industries, and interests of Wyoming," she added.
Simpson was known for his humor and wit, which endeared him to many both within and beyond Wyoming's borders. His political career included serving as Republican Whip in the Senate and maintaining close relationships with Presidents Reagan and Bush.
In addition to his political service, Simpson contributed as a private citizen on significant initiatives such as the Iraq Study Group and the Simpson-Bowles Fiscal Responsibility Commission. His lifetime achievements were recognized in 2022 when he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Lummis described Simpson as "a proud son of Cody, Wyoming," who came from a family committed to public service. She noted that gatherings often saw people gravitating towards him due to his personable nature.
Senator Lummis extended her sympathies to Ann Simpson, Al's wife of over 70 years, their children Colin, William, Susan, and their grandchildren during this challenging period.
