The University of Wyoming men’s golf team finished the first day of the Mountain West Conference Championships on May 3 in second place, with a score of 275, or 13 under par. The tournament is being held at Omni Tucson National Resort.

The event matters for the Cowboys as they compete against other top teams in their conference, with San Diego State leading at 273 (-15) and San Jose State third at 277 (-11).

Head coach Joe Jensen said, “I’m proud of the kids. They’ve worked hard, and they’ve had some good stretches over the last month or so. We’ve done some good things here thus far, we’ve applied some good principles, and we’ve had some good practices.”

Brody Leid and Brody Knowlton led Wyoming’s effort on Sunday by each carding a first round score of 67 (-5), tying them for second individually and placing them two shots behind Tyler Kowack from San Diego State. Leid recorded five birdies without any bogeys during his round. Knowlton made six birdies but also had one bogey.

Kellen Ball is tied for seventeenth after shooting a two-under-par round (70), while Conner Scheich sits tied for twenty-first following a final score of 71 (-1). Kristof Panke ended his opening round with a score of 76 (+4), tying him for fifty-fourth place.

Jensen said about preparations moving forward: “We are going to prepare tomorrow like we did today. We are going to stay in our lane and take it one day at a time. Good players create consistency, and we are trying to create consistency.” The second round will begin Monday morning at eight o’clock Mountain Standard Time.

The broader significance is that Wyoming remains close to the lead as they move into subsequent rounds against strong conference competition.
