The University of Wyoming men’s golf team will compete in the Mountain West Conference Championships from Sunday through Tuesday in Tucson, Arizona, according to a May 1 announcement.
The event is important for the Cowboys as they aim to build on their recent preparations and performances. The tournament will take place at Omni Tucson National Resort, a par-72 course measuring 7,194 yards.
Head coach Joe Jensen said, “We are just going to keep doing what we are doing. We’ve had good preparation the last week or so. That’s not to say that our last 60 days of preparation haven’t been good. But I like the way we are trending. We are just going to stick to our process and go out there and compete.”
The team is familiar with the course after participating in the Arizona N.I.T., which was also held at Omni Tucson National Resort earlier this year. Brody Leid said, “The course is pretty gettable. The par 5s are really reachable. There will be birdies out there. The weather in Arizona will be warm and without a lot of wind, so it’ll be scoreable.” Leid led Wyoming in their final regular-season tournament by tying for 25th at the UC Davis El Macero Classic with a score of 222 (+6), helping secure a seventh-place finish for the team.
Leid has achieved four top-25 finishes this season and seven during his career, maintaining a team-low scoring average of 72.5 this season. Brody Knowlton holds an average of 72.8 and has earned Mountain West Freshman of the Week honors three times this year; Kristof Panke follows with an average of 73.3.
Last year, Wyoming finished tenth at the conference tournament held in Oregon, where Leid tied for thirtieth place individually.
Sunday’s round begins at 8 a.m., with eighteen holes scheduled each day.
