U.S. Senators Cynthia Lummis and John Barrasso, both representing Wyoming, have introduced a resolution in the United States Senate to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Nellie Tayloe Ross’s election as the first female governor in the United States. This initiative was sparked by students from Green River High School.
“Wyoming has long been a home for trailblazing women. Honoring Governor Ross on the 100th anniversary of her election reminds us of the women who paved the way for the opportunities we have today,” stated Senator Lummis. She added that celebrating Ross’s legacy highlights her enduring influence on both state and national levels, expressing gratitude to Green River High students for their contribution.
Senator Barrasso remarked, “Wyoming women have blazed the trail for women’s rights and equality since our state’s founding. 100 years ago, Governor Nellie Tayloe Ross was elected as the first female governor in America. Her historic election reminds us of the lasting impact Wyoming women have had on our state and nation for generations.” He expressed pride in collaborating with Green River High School students to honor Ross’s legacy and acknowledge all Wyoming women who embody the Code of the West.
Nellie Tayloe Ross took office as Wyoming’s 14th governor on January 5, 1925, serving a two-year term before becoming the first female director of the United States Mint.
